ECCC ’12: “The Massive” Issues To Include Bonus Materials

Revealed exclusively at CBR, it looks like there is an extra incentive for you to purchase Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson’s upcoming series “the Massive” in single issues. Similar to previous Wood titles that offered additional material for those who bought them in single issues (i.e. “Demo”), each issue of “the Massive” will come with an additional four-page story written and illustrated by Wood himself.

The format of the story is less comic-based than the rest of the book, but rather text, image and design that Wood will compose himself consisting of “material written in the voice of the main character, Callum Israel and will both give backstory and context and even expand on the stories in the main part of the book”. The additional stories will not be “essential” information, but rather bonus material that expands on the world he has designed for the book. So, in other words, if you plan to buy in trade, you won’t miss out on too much — but if you buy in single floppies, i.e. “the preferred format”, you get your moneys worth.

Additionally, this material will only be available in the single issues and not digital or collected editions. Digital will be cheaper ($2.99 vs $3.50, and $1.99 after a month), but the only place to get the additional material is by visiting your local shop and buying a physical copy of the book. Wood notes this is part of his examination of his career and his thoughts on digital vs. print, and how to appease everyone — both readers and retailers.

At the moment, Wood has only committed this additional set of material for the first six issues, but has every intention of continuing it beyond that. For the full interview with Wood, be sure to check out CBR.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
