The Hollywood Reporter have revealed Ellen Page is the first cast member to join the upcoming Netflix adaptation of “The Umbrella Academy.” Created by writer Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Ba for Dark Horse Comics, “The Umbrella Academy” is set in an alternate 1977, and revolves around seven children who were born with supernatural abilities, and are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves to be trained as the titular team.

Page will play Vanya, who is initially the only one of the seven without any powers, and is considered the black sheep of the family. The series begins when she is reunited with her siblings after Sir Reginald’s death. This will mark Page’s second comic book role, having played Kitty Pryde / Shadowcat in X-Men: The Last Stand and Days of Future Past.

The show, which will initially consist of ten episodes, is produced by Dark Horse Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions, with Way serving as co-executive producer. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Netflix’s Altered Carbon) is serving as the showrunner, and the pilot’s script was written by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist).

The Umbrella Academy will start airing next year. In the meantime, you can read our retrospective of the first miniseries, “The Umbrella Academy: The Apocalypse Suite,” here, and be sure to stay tuned to Multiversity Comics for more casting news.
