Per The Hollywood Reporter, cartoonist Everett Peck, the creator of the animated 1994-1997 sitcom Duckman, and the comic book it was based on, has died at the age of 71. Peck passed away on Tuesday, June 14, following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. As well as Duckman, Peck created the Cartoon Network series Squirrel Boy, and contributed to shows like The Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Rugrats, The Critic, Jumanji, Men In Black: The Series, and Godzilla: The Series.

Peck was born in San Diego on October 9, 1950, and studied illustration at California State University, Long Beach, before becoming a teacher at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1984. His cartoons appeared in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Playboy and TIME, and he entered the animation world working as a character designer on The Real Ghostbusters from 1986 to 1988.

In 1988, he introduced the character of Eric T. Duckman, an anthropomorphic private detective, in the pages of “Dark Horse Presents” #22. After joining animation studio Klasky Csupo in 1990, Peck got a pilot for an animated version off the ground with his own cash, after financiers balked at the tone of the adult cartoon. The show, which starred Jason Alexander as the voice as the hapless title character, ran for 70 episodes on the USA Network, and became a three-time nominee for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program; it also spawned six Topps Comics series, which Peck drew the covers for.

Peck then worked as a character designer on Sony’s Extreme Ghostbusters, and Jumanji series, as well as an executive design consultant on the studio’s Godzilla and Men in Black cartoons. After overseeing Squirrel Boy, which ran from 2006 to 2008, Peck primarily concentrated on painting. In 2014, he returned to teaching at his alma mater of Cal State Long Beach.

Peck is survived by his wife Helen Vita, his children, Emily and Spencer, stepdaughter Paloma, and granddaughter Sidley. Duckman star Jason Alexander paid tribute to Peck on Twitter, saying, “It was an honor to voice his beloved creation and a joy to have known Everett. He was one of a glorious kind. My best to his family & friends.”
