"Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" Was Apparently A Terrible Idea

Remember Molly Norris, the cartoonist responsible for the image seen in this post? Well, Norris has apparently taught us all a lesson of the global climate we live in today. What originally started as an amusing cartoon that soon went viral, Norris is now labeled as a “prime target” by Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and has since gone into hiding with the FBI’s witness protection program. Seriously.

Initially done as a reponse to Comedy Central censoring an episode of South Park, Norris now fears for her life. I can’t imagine that every person of the Muslim religion wants to her, but the fact that one person does enough to incite some sort of fear in Norris and the FBI is pretty sad. Norris made, as Robot 6 puts it, a rookie mistake here in “thinking the whole rest of the world is like her and her friends.” The whole situation is rather indicative of modern paranoia though. I don’t know if there has been any direct threat on her life outside of Awlaki, but it was apparently enough, and that’s really sad. I don’t want to defame anyone myself, because to me the image seems harmless and I can understand why someone may not feel that way, but the poor girl having to go into hiding? That just doesn’t seem right.

I can’t imagine we’re helping by posting the image ourselves, but Norris doesn’t deserve this.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
