This is assuredly a blast from the past (having originally been put online in 2010), but with the recent and major press for The Hunger Games, it has popped up on our radar again for the first time (via Agent M’s Twitter feed).
Adapting the opening sequence of “the Hunger Games” (the book) into a five-page silent comic (which can be read here), Hicks put the comic online back in August of 2010 in anticipation of the final book in the series’ release. It is very much her signature style with her familiar character designs, although this time placed within the dystopian and post-apocalyptic environment. In the blog post, Hicks explains that the scenery is based on some photos of abandoned camp bunkers, and that she tried rather hard not to rip off the popular Mad Max style of post-apocalypse sheik. Given that this was done at least a year before the film went into production, it’s pretty interesting to see what the film version ended up looking like in comparison.
Either way, with everyone going Hunger Games crazy in anticipation of the upcoming adaptation, we figured sharing it with you this morning might be a fun way to start the day. You can find the full five-pages after the cut, and be sure to check it out on Hicks’ website, as well as her other work including the recently released “Friends With Boys.”
