Faith Erin Hicks is a wonderful creator, having worked for years on a number of web comics that won her many fans the world over (and a Wolverine story that did the same for me), and she’ll be releasing her first complete graphic novel “Friends With Boys” from First Second Books (the publisher of one of my all-time fave OGN’s – “Laika” by Nick Abadzis) in 2012. Here is a quick elevator pitch on it from Hicks herself:

Friends With Boys is about Maggie McKay, a teenager entering her first year in public high school. Previously Maggie had been home-schooled, taught by her mom and her only classmates her three (very loud, probably very manly) brothers. Now she’s following her brothers to high school, where she’ll have to deal with something pretty terrifying to a home-schooled kid: her peers. Also Maggie’s stalked by a local ghost, and having a ghost follow you to school on your very first day … very not cool.

Before the release, she is going to be releasing a page a day of this 211 page graphic novel online (well, Monday through Friday starting yesterday). Having read through the 34 pages that are up so far, I can wholeheartedly support this book and say it features the charm, personality and unique perspective Hicks is known to bring to her work, while still featuring the dazzling art that we’ve all come to love. And on top of that, this is a story that is close to Hicks’ experience transitioning from a home-schooled student to just another high schooler (minus the ghosts I can only assume).

Definitely check it out, and if you enjoy it make sure to pre-order her book when it becomes available to do so.
