The words “superheroes” and “Fantagraphics” aren’t two that you would expect to go together naturally. Fantagraphics is best known as the home of underground and alternative comics and graphic novels, generally those poking their heads into Best Of lists at the end of the year between countless Marvel and DC book. Now, that’s all about to change.
Fantagraphics Books have announced the launch of All Time Comics, an imprint focused on alternative superhero comics headed by cartoonist Josh Bayer and his brother, music video director Sam Bayer. The Bayers, together with a plethora of artists from across comics history like the late Herb Trimpe, Ben Marra, Jim Rugg and Johnny Ryan, are creating “Crime Destroyer”, one of six inter-connected superhero comics making up All Time Comics’ initial lineup. “Crime Destroyer” will mark the final publication of new Herb Trimpe comic art after his death last year.
The other announced series are titled “Atlas”, “Bullwhip” and “Blind Justice”, though there’s no official word on the artists working on those titles. Josh Bayer was interviewed at CBR about the upcoming slate of comics and he posted this piece honouring Herb Trimpe while showcasing a look at his artwork for “Crime Destroyer” #1.
“Crime Destroyer” #1 drops March 2017 and begins the All Time Comics movement.
