'Fire Power' #1

Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have announced “Fire Power,” a new series debuting in May 2020, written by Robert Kirkman with art by Chris Samnee, colorist Matt Wilson, and letterer Rus Wooton. The comic tells the story of Owen Johnson, who travels to China to learn about his birth parents, and stumbles upon a mysterious Shaolin Temple where the students are attempting to rediscover the lost art of the Fire Power – the ability to throw fireballs. It’s “a power they claim will be needed soon to save the world. Will Owen Johnson be the first person in a thousand years to wield the Fire Power?”

Kirkman said in the press release, “Getting to create a whole new world with its own mythology and rules is always the highlight of my life. Getting to do that with Chris Samnee is definitely a high water mark in this dusty old career of mine. With a massive cast of characters populating this sprawling globe-spanning epic Chris has proven more than adept at handling anything I’ve thrown at him in the time we’ve been toiling away on this series in secret. Kung Fu, Fireballs, Chris Samnee, crazy action, Chris Samnee, Chris Samnee. What more could I say to get you excited about this book?”

The book is the first project from Kirkman to be announced since the surprise ending of “The Walking Dead” earlier this year. It also marks the first comic book project by Samnee since the end of his “Captain America” run with Mark Waid in early 2018. Wilson has regularly collaborated with Samnee on his Marvel projects, while Wooton was formerly Kirkman’s letterer on “The Walking Dead.”

“Fire Power” #1 will be released in May. Until then, head on over to The Hollywood Reporter for an exclusive preview, and for more from Kirkman.
