After spending more than a decade at Dark Horse Comics, the Firefly universe of comics will be moving over to Boom! Studios. Writer Greg Pak and artist Dan McDaid will be debuting an ongoing series this November, appropriately called “Firefly.” The book will explore the characters’ pasts during the Unification War, the conflict who’s end was the first scene of the TV series, and the effects of which were felt throughout the short lived show. This will also be the first tie-in comic with “Firefly” in the title like the original show: all the Dark Horse books were under the “Serenity” banner.

The series will follow Mal and Zoe as they’re hunted by Unifactors, mercenaries that are hunting down war criminals, causing the Serenity crew to reflect on their time in the war. Pak had this to say on the direction of the title, “We’re getting the chance to reveal essential truths about our heroes’ pasts and put them through experiences in the here and now that they’ve never fully dealt with before.”

As part of the move to BOOM!, they will also publish “Firefly: Legacy Edition, Book One,” which will collect all the books previously published by Dark Horse Comics.

The original Firefly show only ran for one season in 2002 on Fox, but has been a cult classic ever since. There was a sequel film called Serenity in 2005. Dark Horse had been the sole publisher of the franchise until this point. They released several mini-series and one-shots, but never an ongoing series. With the exception of “The Shepherd’s Tale,” which told the complete origin of Shepard Book, all of the Dark Horse books took place either in between the TV show and film, or after the film. So this era has been unexplored so far, and it will hopefully fill in a lot of crucial backstory for the characters.
