Earlier this year we covered Black Label, a new imprint from DC Comics, which will be dedicated to standalone, out-of-continuity comics by some well-known creators. Initially, six titles were announced. Now, DC have unveiled the release date schedules for three of the upcoming books from the imprint.

”Batman: Damned:” From the creative team behind “Luthor” and “Joker,” Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo, this will be a three-part, bi-monthly series that focuses on a Batman/Constantine team-up. The first issue will release on September 19, 2018.

Superman: Year One:” Written by comics legend Frank Miller and pencilled by John Romita Jr., as the title suggests, this three-issue book will be another retelling of Superman’s origin with a little of that Frank Miller flair. The first issue will be out in comic stores sometime in November with a bi-monthly shipping schedule.

“The Other History of the DC Universe:” This seven-issue series was previously in the works before the Black Label imprint was announced and will be written by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, “The American Way”). The story “focuses on the lives of those behind the costumes, and their endeavors to overcome real-world issues. It isn’t about saving the world, it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.” The first issue will go on sale in December of 2018.

While Black Label’s mission statement “gives premier talent the opportunity to expand upon the canon of DC’s iconic Super Hero comic book characters with unique, standalone stories that are outside of the current DC Universe continuity,” the imprint will also be re-releasing several titles “that represent the DC Black Label spirit and mission under the banner,” and “can give fans a clearer idea of what to expect from the line as a whole.”

Among the books being re-released under the banner are such classics as “Kingdom Come,” by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, “All-Star Superman,” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, and Darwyn Cooke’s “DC: The New Frontier.” Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s “Batman: Year One,” and some of Miller’s other works, will gradually fold under the new imprint as well. But that’s not all, Sean Murphy and Matt Hollingsworth’s “Batman: White Knight,” will be the first collected edition to come out of the imprint.

Matt was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, but is really a Cubs fan. When he's not reading comics , he's most likely sleeping next to his dog. He does not breathe actual fire. Despite several warnings, he will never stop giving the children in his family superhero clothing. You can find him on Twitter here.
