Marvel Studios debuted the first trailer for Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, today on Good Morning America:

The trailer opens with Larson’s Kree captain crash-landing in a Blockbuster store, which coupled with Samuel L. Jackson’s younger Nick Fury introducing himself to her, makes clear the film is set during the ’90s. Similar to Gerry Conway and John Buscema’s original 1978 “Ms. Marvel” run, this version of Carol Danvers is an amnesiac warrior, who’s slowly beginning to remember her old life on Earth as an Air Force pilot. Also seen in the trailer:

  • Carol waking up on the Kree capitol world of Hala.
  • Carol with fellow pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), who in the comics is the mother of another Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau.
  • Captain Marvel flanked by other members of the Kree Starforce, Att-Lass (Algenis Perez Soto), and Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan), as well as Jude Law’s mentor character.
  • A brief glimpse of Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) on a beach, as well as Marvel punching an old woman on transport that she suspects is a Skrull.
  • A back shot of a young Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), long before he went renegade in Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • A faded shot of a younger Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).
  • Fury donning the pager he used to contact Marvel at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
  • Shots of Marvel and the rest of Starforce wearing Kree helmets underwater, in a nod to the mask Jamie McKelvie gave the character as part of her 2012 revamp. We also see Marvel using the helmet again, sans plasma mouthguard.

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019. Check out the teaser poster for the film below as well: fans should recognize the tagline from the second volume of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run on the character’s title.
