In a bit of shocking news, Deadline TV is reporting that Frank Darabont – creator and executive producer of the Walking Dead – is stepping down as the showrunner of the series, which is still in production of its second series.

The news doesn’t seem to make sense, especially since Darabont had attended SDCC this past weekend along with Robert Kirkman to talk about Season 2 with fans. It’s also odd because Darabont spend five years trying to get the TV version of the Walking Dead off the ground, wrote and directed the pilot, and was quoted last month as saying, “In TV, you have to get ideas across in a more economical way,” he said. “But the process is fundamentally the same (as features), just accelerated. There’s no time for second guessing. The wheels are in constant motion. I love that about television. If I’d known how much fun it was, I’d have done it years ago.

It is unknown if Darabont is completely off the show at this time, but as we learn more about this decision we’ll report it. It has also been said that the behind-the-scenes turmoil has not affected the production of the show, and while it is unknown who will step up to become the new showrunner, but there is a chanced that Glen Mazzara, who joined as executive producer for this season and has showrunning experience, could possibly do it.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
