Per The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Miller has started his own publishing company, named Frank Miller Presents (FMP). Miller will act as president and editor-in-chief, while former DC co-publisher Dan DiDio will serve as publisher of the company. Silenn Thomas, the CEO of Miller’s production company Frank Miller Ink, will serve as chief operating officer.
“Investing in artists and the future of comics has always been my one true passion and creative calling,” Miller declared in a statement. “Dan, Silenn and I couldn’t be more proud to be launching Frank Miller Presents, which will serve as fertile ground for storytellers and new creations. Our focus for this publishing company is to cultivate a fellowship of artists and writers to mentor, collaborate and push forward not only each other but the art form as well.”
The company intends to publish two to four titles a year, based on previous Miller comics and new ideas. The first two titles to be announced were “Sin City 1858,” a western set in 19th century Basin City, and “Ronin Book Two,” a sequel to Miller’s 1983 series, which followed a samurai who had been reincarnated in a dystopian New York City. The original titles “Pandora” and “Ancient Enemies” were also announced, though no details were provided on either of them. It was not stated who will be on the creative teams, including whether Miller will draw or write the books. Printing rights for his previous works will remain at the original publishers, including the previous home of “Sin City,” Dark Horse Comics.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions online: Jimmy Palmiotti said seeing “two friends doing what they love most – making comics,” made him happy. Referring to the Islamophobic perception of Miller’s “Holy Terror” (a criticism Miller himself acknowledged), Mathias DeRider commented, “It’s easy to make fun of Frank Miller’s recent work, partly because much of it is bad. And yeah ‘New 52’ was run badly. But let’s not forget that Dan Didio allowed a culture of serial harassment, predatory behavior, and misogyny in editorial. I don’t know why he’s back.” José Youngs pointed out, “FOR YEARS, Dan Didio couldn’t be bothred to fire sexual predator Eddie Berganza […] Frank Miller needs to retire. Pass on all of this.”
Regardless, FMP intends to launch its first titles later this year.
