Via Inverse, Dark Horse Comics have announced the Hellboy Universe’s version of Frankenstein’s monster will return in a new limited series, “Frankenstein: New World.” Written by Mike Mignola with Christopher Golden and Thomas Sniegoski, the book will follow the monster after the events of Ragna Rok, when he is reawakened by Lilja, a young girl living in a human sanctuary at the center of the world. Learning of her visions of evil stirring on the surface, the monster and Lilja decide to head up to the new Frog World (which is inhabited by Abe Sapien’s descendants) to put a stop to the threat. It will feature art by Peter Bergting, who previously worked with Mignola and Golden on the Outerverse comics, and colors and lettering by Michelle Madsen.
Mignola commented, “When we burned down the world and then started it again with frog people [at the end of 2018’s ‘B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know’], I really did think that would be all we’d see of it. And in that same issue, that little glimpse of the Frankenstein monster in the center of the earth, that’s the last I thought we’d see of him.” But, as Mignola explains, “When Chris and Tom came to me with the idea of having Frankenstein’s adventures in Frog World, I think it took me about ten seconds to say yes.”
Golden adds, “Strangely, I don’t think of this as a post-apocalypse story at all. It’s all in the subtitle: ‘New World.’ Humanity had their shot and blew it, and now the world has been remade. It’s wild and untainted, with flora and fauna we could not have imagined. When Frankenstein and this young girl, Lilja, go out to explore this beautiful but dangerous new world, they also need to make sure they don’t bring the taint of the old world with them.”
Sniegoski added, “The world above has been reborn as a kind of Garden of Eden, and Frankenstein must try and prevent an evil from spreading across this new, untainted world. It’s not at all as bleak as most post-apocalyptic stories usually are. This one has a little bit of everything‚ action, adventure, humor, and (of course) monsters. What would a story set in the Mignolaverse be without monsters?”
“Frankenstein: New World” #1 will be released on August 3.
