Gail Simone to Write Tomb Raider Comic

This week saw the release of Dynamite’s new “Red Sonja” ongoing, penned by Gail Simone in which she takes the fabled fantasy heroine and revitalizes her for a new audience in a way that makes that insane metal bikini seem a bit less non-sensical. It’s a great move on Dynamite’s behalf pulling in a great creator to write Sonja, and Dark Horse clearly has the same idea.

Why? Because Simone has been tapped to write a new “Tomb Raider” ongoing. Lara Croft is in some ways similar to Red Sonja in that she’s a popular female icon embraced by both sides of the gender fence, yet can’t seem to quite make it in comics outside of a select fanbase. With the success of “Sonja” and Simone’s work at DC, it only makes sense that the perfect writer for the job is in fact Simone, and we can only assume there will be great things to be seen with this upcoming series.

It also seems like the series will pull from the rebooted game series, which debuted earlier this year on consoles. I haven’t played it, but I’ve been interested; I do, however, have a Dark Horse released “Tomb Raider” comic that came out in conjunction with that game, and I quite liked it. So, fingers clearly crossed here.

No word on the artist, however, but you can imagine with the recent announcement of Ryan Sook drawing “Ghost,” Dark Horse will be able to get someone pretty great for “Tomb Raider” of all things.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
