Today on DC’s The Source blog, it was announced that Gail Simone would be leaving Wonder Woman at a currently unknown date, but indications are that she’ll at least be contributing up until issue #600. What the reason for her departure is and whether or not it has anything to do with Rich Johnston’s repeated Grant Morrison rumors for the book is unclear at this time, but the fact of the matter is Simone is out and some unknown writer is in.
While I must admit that I dropped Wonder Woman during Simone’s run (not because of her but because of my overall indifference to the character), it is still a shame to see her go. She obviously has quite the passion for the character (see her touching send off to her CBR Wonder of Wonders audience today) and she is without a doubt one of the coolest and most undeniably wonderful creators working in the industry. While this does mean we get more Birds of Prey and, improbably enough, more of the fantastic Welcome to Tranquility (more Neil Googe!), it is still a shame when you read her heartfelt goodbye to the character. It seems increasingly clear that she is getting a raw deal, but she’s such an ace that she takes in stride.
Good tidings Gail Simone, keep up the good work and we’ll keep on reading.
