According to Bleeding Cool, Marvel will be relinquishing the rights to its “Dark Tower” series, based on Stephen King’s novels, to Gallery 13, Simon & Schuster’s graphic novel imprint. Marvel first published “The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born” in 2007 and subsequently published five more prequel comics before adapting the first novel. The first story was written by Peter David (“The Incredible Hulk”) and long time Dark Tower aficionado, Robin Furth, with art by Jae Lee (“Batman/Superman”)

As part of the deal, Gallery 13 will acquire every “The Dark Tower” comic that Marvel published. The prequels, now officially dubbed “Beginnings,” will published in five books, every two weeks beginning August 14, 2018. The six-part reprint of The Gunslinger adaptation is slated for the spring of 2019.

Bleeding Cool reported King saying “I’m delighted to see my stories in this exciting format, where they can reach new readers.” Ed Schlesinger, Senior Editor at Gallery 13, was very enthusiastic, as he said, “Whether you’re just joining Roland Deschain on his brutal and epic journey to the Dark Tower or have already been a longtime member of his ka-tet, these graphic novels boldly and unforgettably capture the one-of-a-kind essence of Stephen King’s Dark Tower reading experience in comic form.”

It’s notable that Simon and Schuster has been the official publisher of Stephen King for twenty years, so his oversight makes sense given how meaningful the series has been for King. The Gunslinger was first published in 1982. The seventh and concluding book was not published until 2004. King has spent a majority of his life with this story, so Dark Tower fans should have plenty to look forward to.

Make sure to pick up the first volume of “Beginnings” which includes “The Gunslinger Born” on August 14, 2018.
