As Disney took over the world of “Star Wars”, they had talked about wanting to not just do a new trilogy, but to expand with standalone films set in the universe. While they’ve repeatedly ignored my calls, tweets, emails and endless yelling outside of their offices pushing them to read my spec script adapting “Shadows of the Empire”, they apparently are listening to other, perhaps more fitting creators about the subject, namely Gareth Edwards and Gary Whitta.
Edwards, most recently known for “Godzilla”, and Whitta, the guy who wrote “The Book of Eli” and some of the Telltale adaptation of “The Walking Dead”, have signed up to direct and write (respectively) the first standalone film set in that universe, with both sounding rather excited about the prospect. Naturally, nothing is know about the specifics besides that it is arriving 12/16/16, and they literally just announced it on the site, but that is very cool. As the Expanded Universe showed, thems some fertile grounds for developing interesting stories, and depending on creative freedom available to these creators, we could be given some pretty amazing stories to add to the “Star Wars” mix.
More on this as we get it. I’m sure everyone is really upset about this, because it’s something that involved something old and nerdy, but hey, it could be cool, right? Let’s find out.
