As scooped by Bleeding Cool because of course, it appears that the news of what DC’s big mysterious announcement is has been revealed 4 hours ahead of schedule: that Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr are going to be collaborating on “Superman.”
It’s not a surprise announcement as this was probably the least well kept secret in history, but it is one that will probably excite DC fans. One of the biggest problems that fans of Superman noted during the New 52 transition is that the character immediately lost any form of direction, with three different writers writing him in three different ways before he apparently developed some form of borderline personality disorder. With Johns, as steward of the New 52, taking over the direction of the character and assumedly attempting to revitalize him to a more stable (and probably close the films) iteration alongside classic illustrator John Romita Jr, it’s probably a pretty decent time to be a fan of Superman if you still read the New 52.
Plus, Johns a) is a student of Richard Donner, which many people (specifically non-comics readers) look to as the epitome of Superman’s characterization and b) wrote those pretty damn great “Action Comics” issues before the New 52, so there’s a decent history there.
We’ll update more when the official announcement goes live, but in the meantime let us know your thoughts on the new creative team for “Superman.”
Update: And here is the official announcement, with the addendum that the book launches this summer.
