As announced on the DC Comics site, writer and DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns is departing “Superman” with his next issue, #39, wrapping up his run with artist John Romita, Jr. in the process. He’s only been on the book since issue #32, so this isn’t exactly a run we’ll be telling our kids about (if you love the Solar Flare power and his new fingerless gloves, maybe you will), but most have appreciated their work on the book and many staunch Superman fans have found Johns’ work with the character to be a throwback of sorts (in a good way).

While JRJR is writing and drawing issue #40, Johns’ letter suggests that he’s leaving the book as well, with Johns’ saying we’ll find out the new team “very soon”. Given that we aren’t far from solicit-ville for issue #41, I’d be guessing it’s very, very soon indeed. Johns also talks about what’s next for him, and he specifically talks about continuing “Justice League” with Jason Fabok as well as a future partnership with artist Gary Frank. Could that be a new “Shazam” book? We’re not sure, but the team of Johns and Frank certainly is a quality one. We’ll let you know when we find out.
