Well, now, this is out of left field. As reported by CBR, artist George Perez has signed an exclusivity contract with BOOM! Studios. It seems like this contract will operate slightly differently to ones at the Big Two as Perez will first work on current BOOM! titles as the artist before announcing creator owned titles. In an interview at CBR, Perez revealed that signing to BOOM! allowed him to be more creative with his work as opposed to Marvel or DC who he thinks are “more corporate driven” nowadays. He also stated that he will receive more benefits as an employee with BOOM! than he would with either of the Big Two:

When I was approached by BOOM!, they offered me a chance to work on something I wanted to do, something they hoped would rekindle the creative spark that I felt was being squelched these past few years. I was also offered something that was a bit unique — an employment contract, meaning I would actually receive all benefits of being an employee with tax withholding and medical benefits. To be fair, I was receiving medical benefits at the Big Two as well, but it was frightfully expensive and required full exclusivity. BOOM!’s package is a little more flexible regarding exclusivity — and a good deal cheaper.

So it seems like we’ll be seeing a lot more from Perez in the near future thanks to BOOM!. Perez confirmed that his first creator owned work with BOOM! will be announced at Baltimore Comic Con in September, so be sure to keep an eye here as I’m sure we’ll have news on that when it comes out. For now, though, be sure to read Perez’s interview with CBR (and go back and read “The New Teen Titans” if you haven’t).
