Well, that was a quick transition: last month, “Hulk” re-launched with Mark Waid and Mark Bagley — and now, starting with August’s issue #5, Gerry Duggan steps in as the new series writer.
Duggan will be starting in August with a story titled “The Omega Hulk,” which features Banner and Hulk hunting down other people within the Marvel U who have also received special powers via gamma radiation. It will apparently feature every single character who uses the word ‘hulk’ in their name, and it will re-establish the Hulk with a new status quo. In an interview with Newsarama, Duggan discusses the switch between him and Waid:
I’m going to be inheriting a real fun murder mystery. I’m very excited about Hulk because I have some fun plans. I had some chats with Mark, and I thought what he’s done with Hulk and Banner are brilliant. It’s very grounded, and logical; of course Bruce would make that kind of deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. for the lab with infinite funding in exchange for letting the monster loose. I’m also going to be keeping Banner’s assistants, but also bringing some old friends and new faces.
Bagley will stay on as the series artist, and Waid will still be technically writing the Hulk over in “Original Sin” #3.1-3.4 with Kieron Gillen, in which it turns out that the Hulk was accidentally created by Tony Stark. Dammit, Tony.
Duggan takes over “Hulk” in August. This takeover is only the beginning.
