It’s been clear that Marvel, since acquiring the rights to her, has had big plans in store for Angela. Making her Thor and Loki’s sister during “Original Sin” was obviously a huge step, but the new ongoing series “Angela: Asgard’s Assassin” will push her further into understanding her identity as the daughter of Odin and one of the warrior angels from the Tenth Realm (who hate Asgard, generally). To quote Beast from the X-Men animated series though, oh my stars and garters to that creative team though, as Kieron Gillen and Marguerite Bennett (who is making a lot of noise at Marvel now) are co-writing and Phil Jimenez and Gillen’s “Journey into Mystery” cover artist Stephanie Hans will be on art.
That’s a killer set of creators, and the way the art works will be Jimenez on the main thread with Hans handling little mini-stories within each issue. Given her huge import to this more mythic side of the Marvel universe and her unexplained past, there’s going to be a lot to cover, so the idea that there will be two stories for the price of one works for this reader both in a bang for your buck sense and an overall reach of story one.
The interview CBR has with Gillen and Bennett is well worth a read, and they have some fascinating bits to how they view the character and her role in the greater scope of the Marvel universe. Gillen had this to say about what the first arc would be all about, and I gotta say: I’m intrigued.
In a lot of ways Angela is her own worst enemy. I think the struggle she’s going to have to go through to integrate with the Marvel Universe and to accept who she is, and then process what that means for who she has to become will involve her fighting with herself just as much as her fighting with physical obstacles around her.
This book arrives in November, and you can go ahead and guess we’ll be covering it, especially with our boy Kieron co-writing.
