Finally.

Update: I’ve been told we can’t just have a post that says “finally,” that we actually have to have a little bit of content, so here goes.

Announced on Variety, Marvel is in the planning stages of developing a solo-film for Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow to be part of their Phase 3 Cinematic Universe Initiative. Having appeared now with a pivotal role in Iron Man 2 and the Avengers with an upcoming starring role in Captain America: Winter Soldier, the Black Widow is the sole female member of the superhero team — and now, she could also be the first female superhero to get her own film.

Let’s just go over that again: Black Widow could be getting a solo superhero film before DC has made a Wonder Woman film.

It’s incredibly exciting for a number of reasons, particularly the aforementioned one, but it’s also exciting because now that character will have just as much of an opportunity to be as developed as her male counterparts. Outside of Clint Barton/Hawkeye, she’s the only character in the Avengers to not have a real backstory, having only appeared in supporting roles. Kevin Feige mentions that we’ll learn more about her in Winter Soldier, but it would only make sense to allow her to have her own film in which to kick some ass, take some names and hold the spotlight.

So with her role in Winter Soldier beefed up to the point where she seems to be just as much the star as Chris Evans’ Captain America (gauging the previews, anyway), it’ll be interesting to see what can be done with a Black Widow film.

I mean, she has red in her ledger. She means to cross it out. I can think of about five films from that premise alone.

And maybe we’ll find out what happened to her accent? Who knows.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
