In news that could very easily win the award for “Best Announcement Of 2015”, Entertainment Weekly have reported that Grant Morrison will be taking over as Editor-In-Chief of “Heavy Metal”. If you listen closely, you can hear the distant sounds of guitars shredding and faces melting like the end of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

For those of you who have never heard of “Heavy Metal”, or are only familiar with the 1981 film, let me put it this way: this is the perfect pairing. “Heavy Metal” is famous for being an anthology magazine that blended a mix of darker, adult-oriented science fiction and fantasy with all-out erotica. The magazine featured comic strips as well as articles, interviews and short prose. The Entertainment Weekly article describes it as “Playboy for nerds” and they’re not far off. Now the guy who wrote “The Invisibles” is in charge.

Hopefully this will put “Heavy Metal” back on the map in a big way as it has somewhat languished of late and if anyone knows how to revitalise a property that has maligned for years, it’s Grant Morrison.

And not only that, but it has been announced that the concept art Jack Kirby created for the film adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s novel “Lord Of Light” will be printed in the magazine in full colour. This art was used as part of the “Canadian Caper” exfiltration of hostages taken from as US Embassy in Iran in the lates 70s, or as it’s known better know: the true story that inspired the film Argo. To see that art in print is going to be a dream come true for many people.

Be sure to head over to EW for the full announcement as well as statements from Grant Morrison on the matter.

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
