Husband/wife and writer/artist duo Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman are reteaming, along with colorist Jordan Boyd, in DC’s “Earth One” graphic novel world for “Green Lantern: Earth One” Volume 1. Earth One is an earth in the DC multiverse unburdened by continuity and previous origins, with stories that reimagine iconic DC characters and modernize them to make them feel fresh and new. Previously, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Teen Titans have all got the Earth One treatment. This version of Hal Jordan is a scientist and astronaut surveying astronauts for Ferris Galactic who stumbles upon a Green Lantern Corps ring and sets out to revive the corps after their annihilation by the Manhunters.

Hardman and Bechko have produced work together before, most notably the ongoing “Invisible Republic” for Image as well as “Savage Hulk” at Marvel, “Star Wars: Legacy” at Dark Horse, and “Planet of the Apes” at BOOM! Studios. Hardman, who also has done storyboards for movies like Inception and Interstellar, described the series as follows:

“Approaching this as an Earth One story gives us the opportunity to go back to the core concept of Green Lantern and interpret it through the lens of a modern, grounded sci-fi story while still being true to the Silver Age roots of Hal Jordan,” Hardman said in a press release. “Having storyboarded Interstellar, this is an approach I’m comfortable with and have wanted to explore in comics. Realistic sci-fi is only the beginning of this story; we have something much more epic in store.”

This is the first of DC’s “Earth One” titles to be announced in quite awhile. Both “Wonder Woman: Earth One” Vol 1 from Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette and “Teen Titans: Earth One” Vol 2 from Jeff Lemire and Andy MacDonald released last year. The previously announced (at SDCC 2015) “Flash: Earth One” from J. Michael Straczynski and “Aquaman: Earth One” from writer/artist Francis Manapul (currently on “Trinity”) were set to be released in 2016, but have not seen the light of day. Geoff Johns recently stated in his interview about “Doomsday Clock” that him and Gary Frank were hard at work on “Batman: Earth One” Vol 3 but are breaking for the capstone to Rebirth. Perhaps this announcement marks an “Earth One,” or DC graphic novel revival in general and we’ll get more news at SDCC next week?

Nonetheless “Green Lantern: Earth One” Volume 1 from Hardman, Bechko, and Boyd drops March 20, 2018.
