So the first bit is pretty self explanatory, yes? This week, Green Lantern will finally begin filming. Cue excitement all around the room.

The real news, however, is that the role of Abin Sur has been cast. According to the movie blog Heat Vision, Temuera Morrison (who you may or may not remember from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones as Jango Fett) has been cast in the role of the dying alien. This is obviously not the most glamorous role of the film, but it is one of the most important roles. The role of Thomas Kalmaku has also been cast in the hands of Taika Waititi, who is supposed to be Hal’s best friend, but I don’t know much more beyond that.

As far as Temuera goes, though, I think it’s a pretty good casting choice. He is not the most acclaimed actor in the budding group of big names on the film, but I’m very glad they’re choosing to cast real people in the roles of many of the aliens rather than try and be CGI heavy, especially with characters as important as Abin and Sinestro. Temeura has got a good build to be Abin, and with a shaved head and some face paint will no doubt represent the doomed alien closely. Those that remember his voice from AOTC can judge as to if they see it fitting or not, but I don’t personally have a problem with it.

The movie is set to come out June 17th, 2011 in IMAX 3D as well as regular theaters.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
