Greg Rucka Leaves DC?

Many people have absolutely loved Greg Rucka and JH Williams III’s work on Detective Comics with their pet character Kate Kane…aka Batwoman. Rightfully so, as their run was one of the absolute best of the past year and something that screams “no brainer!” in terms of locking up for more issues with those two creators. Yet, when we spoke to Williams III at ECCC, he wasn’t confident about its release. He said the same to iFanboy in one of their videos as well, fueling speculation that it just wasn’t going to happen.

Yesterday at Wondercon, Rucka all but confirmed this, stating that he just turned in his last work for DC (at least for the foreseeable future). As he said on his spotlight panel:

“It is agonizing to walk away from Batwoman.”

Given DC’s quest to reach number one, you’d think that they would have done everything they could to appease creators like Rucka and Williams III. They are without a doubt at or near the peak of their craft and their Detective run was adored by many. It’s a big loss for DC and a big loss for comic fans hoping for more with Kate Kane.

The industry is buzzing with “what will Rucka do next?” talk, but it’s not like the guy is without options. His Stumptown at Oni Press with Matthew Southworth continues to be one of the best books around (Southworth said there’d be a new issue this month), and he’s done plenty of work with Oni and other publishers that indicates that he’ll be fine without having to go to the House of Ideas. Which I really don’t see happening. It will be interesting to watch where his path takes him, assuredly.
