Matt Wagner is returning to yet another of his long-running creator-owned properties this year, when he, colorist Brennan Wagner, and letterer Dave Lanphear launch “Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey.”

Comic Book Resources broke the news that Wagner and co. will return to “Grendel” with an eight-issue sci-fi epic, in which Grendel Prime will journey into space and seek a new home for humanity.

“As civilization comes to an end on Earth, the final Grendel Khan gives Grendel Prime a new directive: Find a new home for the human race,” reads the series’ official description. “But will the deadly and relentless paladin ultimately save humanity . . . or destroy it?”

Grendel Prime is, of course, not the plain-‘ol-assassin version of Grendel, but a futuristic cyborg version of the character that Wagner introduced in 1992. Most of the recent “Grendel” series (notably “Grendel: Behold the Devil” and “Grendel Vs. The Shadow”) have starred original writer-turned-assassin Hunter Rose. This miniseries will mark Grendel Prime’s first comics appearance since 1996.

The series also marks Wagner’s second recent return to one of his popular creator-owned titles. “Mage: The Hero Denied,” Wagner’s third entry in the “Mage” epic, wrapped up just last month, presumably leaving him some spare time to tell this “Grendel” story.

Fabio Moon (“Casanova”) will provide variant covers for each issue of “Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey.” You can journey into space with Grendel Prime this October 2, when the series hits shelves.
