“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” Greenlit for 2017, Pressure for Big Opening Weekend Significantly Increases

I think it’s fair to say that a large amount of people are excited for next week’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Fans, casual audiences, old people stumbling into “that new Star Wars movie” are all ready to line up for the film debut of Marvel’s foremost cosmic team. At least that’s what Marvel’s banking on.

Just announced at the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC by Guardians director James Gunn and star Burt Macklin, we can expect to see “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” on July 28th, 2017.

Being a comic book fan in 2014 is so weird, you guys. Not only is a Guardians movie happening at all, but its sequel has already been scheduled for release. And somehow, it’s a little underwhelming. Guardians hasn’t even come out yet so there’s not much for me as a fan to get excited for. Announcing a sequel is still a pretty smart move considering they just announced an animated series and Marvel seems all in on making Guardians an Avengers-tier franchise.

Yet at this moment, my frame of reference for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is a bunch of commercials revolving around the phrase “I am Groot” and Batista’s return to WWE a few months back to help promote the movie. Granted, I’m still very likely going to enjoy Guardians and be more excited for a sequel after seeing it next week, but for now this just seems like A Thing That Is Happening. An announcement that capped off a pretty underwhelming Marvel Studios panel.

Though, if I’m telling the truth, I’ll probably recant everything I just said when the Age of Ultron footage shown earlier tonight gets released. Honestly, so long as Batista doesn’t come back to WWE in 2017, I’ll be fine with whatever the Guardians are doing.
