Guillermo del Toro’s Intro for Treehouse of Horror XXIV is Incredible

Over the years The Simpsons has lost its hold on pop-culture that it once had, as even though the show keeps chugging along the people who watch it grow smaller — or at the very least, less vocal. Yet it is never the less a cultural behemoth, and every now and then they do something to capture our attention again.

This is one of those times.

Director Guillermo del Toro has stepped in to direct this year’s introduction to the latest “Treehouse of Horror”. While the episode itself will probably not be better than “Treehouse VII” (don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos!), the introduction alone as seen above is beyond epic for a Simpsons intro. The sheer amount of references is pretty overwhelming, but del Toro fans will alone spot nods to Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos, Hellboy, Blade II and more within this epic and intro of mass-cultural appropriation. Honestly, there are MANY moments in this video where I either laughed out loud or just said “Wow” to what made it in there, whether it be from a brief Gort cameo (of all things!) or the arrival of the great elder god Cthulhu himself.

Point is: it’s pretty incredible. My favorite reference is at the end, but you’ll get there.

The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror XXIV” airs this Sunday. And, if you’re a Tapped Out player, their Halloween stuff is going on right now (and is an insane amount of fun).

The season premiere with the Homeland parody was alright too.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
