Hastings: The First National Comic Chain

Today Rich Johnston broke and then confirmed a rather incredible story: national electronics chain Hastings will be making their presence felt in the world of comics very soon.

They will be launching direct comics outlets in 127 of their 147 total stores, stocking a considerable amount of new comics ranging from the top mainstream titles to supporting mid-tier and even independent books. While they had always been successful at stocking trade paperbacks (I used to purchase most of my books from their store in Moscow, Idaho), this move into stocking new books works in exact opposition to both the movement towards digital and in retail trends.

Or does it?

As Hastings’ James Parker told Rich Johnston:

After the decision was made to pursue the comic industry, two test stores were chosen to see what impact a full comic presence would make in our stores. These stores would contain 32 feet of new comic releases, 32 feet of back issues, 44 linear feet of Manga and graphic novels, an expansion in action figures, role playing books, comic-related merchandise and supplies among other things. Almost immediately, these stores showed a double-digit improvement in comic sales, and a significant sales increase within the department in which the comics are featured.

So perhaps comics are still a viable option at the retail level?

One of the coolest things about this deal, besides Hastings’ immediately becoming the largest comic retailer (and perhaps a real catalyst for the industry) is the fact that they are primarily featured in small to medium sized markets, many of which do not have their own comic shop. This gives those customers a closer option to get their weekly fix, and could lead to a huge boost in the industry’s flagging numbers.

Make sure to read Johnston’s article for more, as he speaks to Parker in depth about their plans. I for one am very excited about the potential of this deal.
