2000 AD have announced “Hawk the Slayer,” a five-issue miniseries that will act as a sequel to the cult film of the same name. The creative team will consist of writer Garth Ennis, artist Henry Flint, and letterer Rob Steen, with Greg Staples providing cover art for the miniseries.
For those unfamiliar with the 1980 film, it starred John Terry and Jack Palance as Hawk and his evil brother, Voltan, respectively. The film chronicles the brothers’ ongoing fight over a powerful sword that is connected to a magical mind stone, with Hawk gathering a group of allies to help him to defeat his brother.
Describing the story for “Hawk the Slayer” in an interview, Ennis stated, “There’s a nasty sense of old evil on the rise… and Hawk & company find themselves in some sinister places.” He delved into more detail, elaborating that “the woman Hawk rescued from being burned as a witch… will call some old ghosts back into the world of the living,” whilst “Crow the Elf will discover the real reason he’s the last of his kind.” Ennis closed by confirming that “of course, the appallingly evil Voltan is going to make an appearance sooner or later — along with his backers, the Black Wizards,” and suggested that there will be a power struggle between them.
“Hawk the Slayer” #1 is scheduled for release on April 13, 2022. You can check out preview pages, the full interview with Ennis, as well as read what Hawk the Slayer‘s director, Terry Marcel, thinks of the project, over at Nerdist.
