BOOM! Studios have announced a new five part miniseries called “Heartbeat” by María Llovet. The series will follow a high school outcast named Eva as she finds out that the most popular boy, Donatien, has an insatiable bloodlust, which she finds equally horrifying and intriguing. The pair grow closer and Eva finds the escape that she has been looking for, but this newly found escape comes with a price: the sacrifice of her moral code.

In a statement made to The Beat, Llovet pinpointed the Japanese film, Kokuhaku (Confessions) as giving her the idea for the miniseries. The film “mentioned a pair of girls that were fans of a psycho-killer,” and Llovet started to wonder “‘what if my main character was to see the person she liked doing something terrible, what would happen? Which values would be put above others?’” She also described the miniseries as a “point of inflection in [her] career.” BOOM! Associate Editor Amanda LaFranco described the series as inhabiting the “space between dark secrets and longing desires” and said that Llovet continues to “impress” with her “characters, designs, and… twisted original story” for “Heartbeat.”

“Heartbeat” was originally published in Spanish in 2015, and Llovet has most recently worked on “Faithless” (with Brian Azzarello) and the original graphic novel “Loud!” The translated “Heartbeat” #1 is scheduled for release on November 20.
