Hector Hammond Cast In Green Lantern

It seems like today is a big day for comic book movies. The first of two villains has been announced for the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern flick! While originally rumored to have the retconned villain Legion in the film, we had since heard that Hector Hammond would be the villain, with Sinestro as a character that is set up to take center stage in a follow up. And today, it was announced who was cast as Hector Hammond.

Or, well, who is “in talks” to play Hector Hammond anyway.

So we know Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). We know Carol Ferris (Blake Lively). Who is supposedly going to be Hector Hammond?

Peter Sarsgaard.

The accomplished actor, whose film An Education is in select theaters now, will be playing the character described as “the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.” Fair enough. Hammond was originally just a petty criminal, and then later retconned in Green Lantern: Secret Origin (by Geoff Johns) to be a private consultant for Ferris aircraft. Either way, he got his powers from a meteorite – just one version had it in the congo and one version had it as a direct result of Abin Sur’s crash landing on Earth. I’m going to go ahead and give a guess here that the origin we’ll see will be the latter.

The Green Lantern script has existed for some time now. Originally, as I said, the villain was supposed to be Legion, who first (and last) appeared in Emerald Dawn as the first villain Hal ever fought and the reason Abin Sur’s ship crashed. Of course, I also mentioned Green Lantern: Secret Origin, which officially retconned that out of existence in order to help queue up Blackest Night. So fine. When the first draft of Green Lantern was written, Johns’ Secret Origin didn’t exist. I’d go ahead and guess that due to the intense popularity of the book, some re-writes were made.

Either way? I like Sarsgaard, and while it’s an odd casting choice, I’m interested to see it work out. Hopefully it’ll work as well as Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Stern in Incredible Hulk

So. Who is Sinestro? And more importantly, WHO WILL PLAY KILOWOG?!

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
