Via Syfy Wire, Dark Horse have announced “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957,” a series consisting of five one-shots written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson, with different artists on each story. All of them will be colored by Dave Stewart, lettered by Clem Robins, and feature cover art by Laurence Campbell.
The first one-shot, “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Family Ties,” will be illustrated by Campbell himself, marking his first title back in the Hellboy Universe since the conclusions of his “B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know” run. The story sees Hellboy and B.P.R.D. agent Susan Xiang answering a “distraught housewife’s urgent pleas for help. Unraveling the mystery of a disturbing, unwanted house guest might lure the occult investigators to exactly where they wanted to be, but also straight into the heart of demonic danger.”
The other entries in the series will be:
• “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Forgotten Lives,” with artist Stephen Green
• “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Fearful Symmetry,” with Alison Sampson
• “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—Falling Sky,” illustrated by Shawn Martinbrough
• “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957—From Below,” by Mike Norton.
Chris Roberson told Syfy that each issue will team up Hellboy with a different member of the B.P.R.D. “Hellboy and his fellow B.P.R.D. agents have tackled menaces large and small over the years, but this time they’re moving into somewhat unfamiliar territory,” he said. He said of ‘Family Ties’ in particular that it “is a domestic horror story that takes place almost entirely inside a normal suburban home where things have taken a very abnormal turn.”
While each story stands alone, they will be continuing the Occult Cold War plotline that began in “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1952.” The “1957” one-shots will wrap up the “Hellboy and the BPRD” 1950s stories, but this will not be where this arc ends. The Occult Cold War will continue with new titles set in the 1960s.
“Family Ties” will be released on September 15. In the meantime, hit the link for more of Campbell’s covers.
