Writer Bryan Edward Hill and artist Dexter Soy are bringing back “Batman and the Outsiders.” The Washington Post confirmed what the end of Hill’s “Detective Comics” run (released today) hinted at, in an interview with the writer.

“All I’ll say is, it is a team book with Batman in it, but the safety is off,” Hill said to the Post. “Hopefully it will be surprising and thrilling in ways that I don’t think people will quite expect. I’m becoming known a bit for a certain kind of intensity in my work and I think this Outsiders project will also continue on in that pathway.”

The Post also debuted the cover to “Batman and the Outsiders” #1, which is illustrated by Tyler Kirkham and Arif Prianto and features Batman, Black Lightning, Katana, Orphan, and the Signal.

Those characters featured heavily in Hill’s “Detective Comics” run, and Hill said it’s no accident that these specific characters found their way into both “Detective” and “Batman and the Outsiders.”

“Myth exists to give us heroic ideals. If you grow up, and you never see yourself as one of those heroes, you start to limit what you think you might be able to do in life,” said Hill. “To be able to … allow other people to see themselves in those roles … that’s one of the most important functions of mythology and society. And comic books are one of the last places where mythology lives.”

In addition to talking about “Batman and the Outsiders,” which, according to editor Chris Conroy, starts in December, Hill touched on his upcoming Vertigo series, “American Carnage,” as well as some of the initial steps he took to get inside Batman’s head.
