Dark Horse Comics have announced “Hitman for the Dead,” a new series from veteran writer/artist Bob Burden (the creator of the “Flaming Carrot Comics”). The series will follow Anthony Harken, a young assassin who lost his soul in a card game; now he travels with the last remnants of the Spanish Inquisition, who hunt down murderers so the souls of their victims can pass on peacefully into the afterlife.
“This project started out as a strategy to promote the new 400-page ‘Flaming Carrot’ Omnibus that we have coming out in September from Dark Horse,” Burden said in the press release. “The story was an experiment. I wanted to change directions, blow out the pipes so to speak, and do a down-and-dirty hardcore thriller/horror/detective thing that would diverge from my humor stuff. Unlike ‘Flaming Carrot,’ people instantly get what ‘Hitman For The Dead’ is about and we feel it has a very viral potential.
It is unknown when the series will hit comic book shops, but a paperback prose novella that sets up the saga is available now at Dark Horse’s booth at San Diego Comic-Con. The novella will be free to read at HitmanfortheDead.com after the convention ends on Sunday night, but in the meantime, you can visit the site for a full, demented description of Harken, and concept art.
