For those that appreciate awards and hearing what is the best of the best according to the critics of the world, you’ll be interested in hearing that when the Hugo Awards nominations rolled out yesterday they came with a “Best Graphic Story” category. The nominees for that category included:

  • Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert’s Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? (DC)
  • Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk’s Captain Britain and the MI:13 Volume 3: Vampire State (Marvel)
  • Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham’s Fables Volume 12: The Dark Ages (DC/Vertigo)
  • Kaja and Phil Foglio’s Girl Genius Volume 9: Agatha Heterodyne (Airship Entertainment)
  • Howard Tayler’s Schlock Mercenary: The Longshoreman of the Apocalypse

Of the five, the one that stands out the most (as Rich Johnston noted) is the cancelled but beloved Captain Britain and the MI:13. Even with a small but rabid fanbase, this title wasn’t enough to keep momentum going and cancellation staved off, yet here it is earning praise from the awards that tout the best in science fiction. Here’s hoping it wins if only to suggest to comic publishers that they need to give books with critical acclaim time to develop (look at what NBC did with 30 Rock, after all).

Also, Eagle Awards nominations are open – as fans of comics, do not forget to vote. This is your chance to have a voice and to help pick the best of the comic world. Favourite Comic Related Website is an intense competition in itself, but I hope while voting you’ll remember a certain website that didn’t make the shortlist this year.
