Humanoids have announced a reimagining of Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo called, “Count,” by writer and artist Ibrahim Moustafa, colorist Brad Simpson, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

The sci-fi graphic novel will follow Redxan Samud, who, after being framed and imprisoned for treason, escapes and rebuilds his life to get revenge on the individuals who caused him imprisonment. This plot is the same as Dumas’s, with the differences being rooted in the setting: Dumas’s was set between 1815 and 1839 during Louis-Philippe of France’s reign and, while the announcement didn’t specify a time period for “Count,” the cover indicates a futuristic setting where robotics are commonplace.

This graphic novel will be the first of three that Moustafa will publish at Humanoids, having signed onto a three-book deal. In a statement, Moustafa said the publisher “has always been at the forefront of publishing beautifully produced, imaginative graphic novels,” adding, “I’m incredibly honored to have ‘Count’ added to that pantheon, and grateful for a long-term commitment to publish more of the kinds of stories I’d like to tell.” Mark Waid, the Publisher of Humanoids, said Moustafa that has taken The Count of Monte Cristo and “brought a modern sensibility to it, with widescreen storytelling and clever reinvention.” He concluded that “this book is a signpost for the kind of graphic novels that we’ll be publishing in the months and years to come.”

“Count” is scheduled for release in March 2021. You can check out some preview pages over at THR.
