Marvel announced today at the ComicsPRO annual meeting today two new series on the cosmic side of their universe. “I Am Groot” with the creative team of Christopher Hastings and Flaviano as well as “Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy” a five-issue miniseries from Jim Starlin and Alan Davis. Both series will debut in May to coincide with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that first weekend. What beautiful corporate synergy at work.
“I Am Groot” will follow baby Groot (who looks exactly like the movie version) as he is trapped on a desolate planet a long ways from the rest of the Guardians. Hastings, who is currently writing “Gwenpool,” told Comicbook.com
I’m excited to take the very cute, very small Groot and completely remove him from the comfort zone of the Guardians of the Galaxy (which is already kind of limited, comfort wise). He’s stranded in an extremely strange land and must find a way back home, with no way for anyone to understand him.
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy” is described as “a Guardians story that could be read by fans of the movie Guardians or the Marvel Comics Guardians,” by Starlin. The title references a new villain, Mother Entropy, whose goal is to spread love throughout the universe and create one happy family. Pip the Troll is also set to join the Guardians in this series, an idea Starlin said he was surprised had not already been thought of. Starlin is no stranger to the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe having created characters like Thanos, Drax, and Gamora as well as the Infinity Stones. The series begins May 3 and will run weekly.
Both of these series come on the heels of the, already announced, biweekly “All-New Guardians of the Galaxy” from Gerry Duggan and Aaron Kuder and “Rocket” from Al Ewing and Adam Gorham, all conveniently set to debut in May. With “Star-Lord” and “Gamora”ongoing, all we’re missing now is a new Drax series and we’ve got the full set.

When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!
