Via Popverse, BOOM! Studios have announced “I Heart Skull-Crusher,” a post-apocalyptic sports comic by writer Josie Campbell and artist Alessio Zonno. It follows Trini, an 18-year old girl on a quest to meet her idol, Screaming Pain Ball player Skull-Crusher, which will require her to travel what’s left of the United States to defeat each member of the title character’s team. And what’s Screaming Pain Ball you ask? You’ll have to read the series to find out.
Campbell states, “I am beyond thrilled to bring ‘I Heart Skull-Crusher’ to life with the talented Alessio. It’s everything I love – queer characters, anime influences, action, comedy, broken hearts, broken bones, post-apocalypse death matches – wrapped up in one gorgeous package. This is the story I’ve been wanting to tell for years!” The book marks her first creator-owned comic, with her previous books having consisted solely of DC Universe titles.
Alessio Zonno, an Italian artist who’s previously worked for BOOM! on their “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” comics, adds the premise “has smashed my head and heart since Josie told me about it! I’m loving working with her and bringing these crazy characters to life, and their incredible story fills me with energy! I’m completely immersed and I can’t stop drawing it!”
Issue #1 will be released on March 13, 2024, with a main cover by Zonno, and a variant from South Korean artist R1c0. Head to Popverse in the meantime to check out R1c0’s artwork, and Zonno’s character designs.
