With Big Hero 6 already set to return to television screens, thanks to Disney Channel’s upcoming Big Hero 6: The Series, IDW has announced that the movie versions of Hiro, Wasabi, Baymax and the gang are coming back to comics as well.

This July, writer Hannah Blumenreich (most notably known for her “Spidey” zine) and artist Nicoletta Baldari (“Star Wars: Forces of Destiny”) will chronicle the fledgling superhero team’s efforts to protect the city of San Fransokyo, in a new, all-ages ongoing series.

“I am so excited to write this comic series,” said Blumenreich, in an IDW press release announcing the book. “I know these characters are near and dear to a lot of people and I hope to do right by them.”

The entire roster of Big Hero 6 appears to be back for IDW’s new series, with Hiro, Baymax, Go Go, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, and Fred all suited up and ready for action on the book’s first cover. In addition to interiors from Baldari, “Big Hero 6” will feature additional covers by Gurihuru (“The Unbelievable Gwenpool”) and Sophie Campbell (“Jem and the Holograms”). Exactly what adventures Big Hero 6 will get up to are unknown, but they’ll likely fall in line with the tone and continuity set by the animated series’s “sneak peek” episode, “Baymax Returns.”

Regardless, it’s exciting to see this iteration of the Big Hero 6 concept finally get its own series and return the team to its comic book roots. Baymax and pals were originally introduced in the 1998 Marvel Comics series “Sunfire and Big Hero Six,” written by Scott Lobdell and Gus Vazquez. A manga adaptation by Haruki Ueno was released with the movie in 2014, but the character’s last appearance at Marvel came in 2012’s “Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth.” Disney’s Big Hero 6: The Series starts on the Disney Channel on June 9, and IDW’s “Big Hero 6” comic will follow up by hitting stores this July.
