It may not be a new movie but it might be just as good. IDW has revealed exclusively to Comic Book Resources  that they are continuing the story of Marty McFly and Doc Brown with “Back To The Future” by Erik Burnham, John Barber,  Brent Schoonover and Dan Schoening. Bob Gale, co-writer of the Back To The Future screenplay, will oversee the project and offer story notes.

The series will reportedly answer lingering questions from the film series including how Marty and Doc met as well as shine light on Doc’s past as a scientist during World War II. Each issue of “Back To The Future” will offer two stories, one that features untold stories and one that offers an alternate timeline story. The series will also feature a changing set of artists.

This is very exciting because as we’ve seen with “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, “The X-Files” and “Ghostbusters”, licensed properties can offer something really exciting to comics.  Back To The Future is a film series that’s near and dear to many people and the idea of an outright remake sounds like blasphemy. Comics offers a happy middle ground where the budget is limitless and you don’t have recast anyone. Burnham and Barber are two writers with a lot of experience in the world of adapting existing properties to comics and so you can expect something solid from them. Schoonover on “Batman ’66” has shown a flair for fun and Schoening has worked with Burnham on “Ghostbutsters” and did some really hilarious stuff in that series. “Back To The Future” could end up being a lot of fun and I know I’ll be picking this up when it debuts in October.
