It looks like today is just full of surprising announcements.

It appears that this coming October, IDW will be publishing a sequel to Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Written by Kate Leth, illustrated by Drew Rausch and with at least one cover by Gabriel Rodriguez (and a special subscription variant by Gabriel Hardman), the story takes place some time after the film. It apparently stars the little girl who an old Winona Ryder was telling the story of Edward’s first descent down into that serene Floridian town in the 90s, and will find her coming face to face with Edward as he “tries to fix a grave mistake” — which either translates towards the death of Jim (spoilers for a 20+ year old film) or something new.

It’s interesting to me that IDW would publish a sequel to the film, as it’s not really something that ever really needed a sequel; the film is everything you need to know. While a competent creative team is formed here (Leth and Rausch both seem like great fits for a re-imagining of Tim Burton’s world), there’s no apparent reason to continue the story other than we’re coming close to the 25th anniversary.

Still, fans of Leth and Rausch’s work should be excited about this. It will definitely be interesting to see how they translate aspects of Burton’s cinematic vision into the comic form.

Here’s the solicit:
