IDW Publishing have announced a five-part miniseries called “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin,” written and illustrated by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” co-creator Kevin Eastman, with co-writer Tom Waltz, inker Andy Kuhn, and colorist Brittany Pezzillo. The miniseries will see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2040, although further details have been kept under wraps for now. It is based on an idea that Eastman and Peter Laird had written in 1987, and Eastman rediscovered ten years ago.

In a statement, Eastman described how the story was originally set 30 years into the future from its inception, and when he found the outline, the story “drifted back to a very different time in TMNT history.” Eastman has since revised the story, with the series now only jumping 20 years into the future. Speaking about the original outline, Waltz said “beyond Peter Laird’s eerily prescient technological and sociological predictions, the story idea itself was exciting and versatile.” With the revisions to the story complete now, Eastman describes the series as “a heartfelt love poem to all the TMNT universes of the past [that] offers up an intense look at one possible future — firmly based on and adapted from an original 33-year-old idea, from the original creators.”

The series is set for launch later this year, with preview pages available here. Each issue of the series will be 48 pages, and issue #1 will have three editions: a regular edition with Eastman’s cover art, and two retailer incentive editions, one with Eastman artwork, and another by Mateus Santolouco.
