You know what’s awesome? Hellboy. You know what else is awesome? The recent return of Hellboy in “Hellboy in Hell.” You know what else is awesome? IDW’s Artist Edition series of hardcover releases, showing off the intimate details and pencil work of fantastic artists from all eras of comics.
So you know what’s kind of unequivocally super awesome excellent supreme? The just announced IDW release of “Hellboy in Hell” in the Artist Edition line. As I said when I got the press release in my e-mail: ho-lee shit!
The Artist Edition books are incomparable resources, both for those who are illustrators themselves or just those who appreciate the intricacies of the art that makes up the comics we all love so very much in this medium. Getting one of these featuring Mignola’s pencils for the latest Hellboy epic is rather stunning, as anyone who has seen his line work before (let alone the completed pages within the actual comics) knows that Mignola’s work breathes atmosphere and mood on a level that very few can master, let alone hope to achieve.
With this mind, it is hard to write some kind of comment on this that isn’t just some series of words vomited out into the post expressing excitement, so I’ll rely on the following gif to stand as any and all form of commentary I could possibly make:

What is an Artist’s Edition?
AN ARTIST’S EDITION PRESENTS COMPLETE STORIES WITH EACH PAGE SCANNED FROM THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL ART.
While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.
