At The Hollywood Reporter, IDW Publishing have announced they will restart their “Transformers” comic book line with a new ongoing series. Simply titled “Transformers,” the twice-monthly comic will be written by Scottish novelist Brian Ruckley, with art by Angel Hernandez and Ron Joseph, and it will explore the origins of the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

“We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling,” Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s VP of Global Publishing, declared in a statement. “We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our longtime fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”

Ruckley said writing the comic was “a real privilege,” elaborating, “Just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes — and one of the best casts of characters — that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.” The series marks the comics writing debut of Ruckley, who is best known for the fantasy trilogy The Godless World. Angel Hernandez is a veteran of IDW’s “Star Trek” titles, while Ron Joseph contributed to shared Hasbro Universe titles like “Micronauts” and “Revolution.”

The previous IDW Transformers universe was begun in 2005 with Simon Furman and E.J. Su’s “The Transformers: Infiltration” #0, and concluded with last month’s “Optimus Prime” #25, written by IDW editor-in-chief John Barber with art by Kei Zama. While Cybertron’s past was heavily explored in the comics set in that universe, this book will present a new take on the mythology in ‘real time.’ The back-to-basics setting also coincides with the new toy line War for Cybertron: Siege.

“Transformers” #1 and #2 will be released in March.
