Image Comics have announced a new series by writer/artist Jason Howard called “Big Girls.” The series will follow Ember as she becomes the newest member of the Big Girls, a group of giant women who fight against giant monsters who used to be men.

Image Comics describes the series as a mixture of John Wick, Godzilla, and HBO’s Girls. In a statement, Howard said that the series was inspired by his “childhood love of giant monster movies like King Kong and Godzilla, and big robot anime like Robotech and Evangelion.” Howard went on to speak about the series in greater detail, stating “The heart of the story really came from me sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the size of the world’s problems, it can seem like the only fix is an equally big solution.”

It was in the process of exploring that feeling that it became the story’s setting, “where their problems are literal giant monster men who are destroying the world (science you crazy!). Fortunately they have an equally giant solution, Big Girls who kick monster butt.” In writing the series, Howard hopes to “examine questions of power, inequality and the complexity of growing up.”

Howard is known for his work on several other stories published at Image Comics, such as “Trees” and “Cemetery Beach” with Warren Ellis, and “The Astounding Wolf-Man” and “Super Dinosaur” with Robert Kirkman.

“Big Girls” #1 will be released digitally and in print on August 12. You can check out a preview of the issue at The Hollywood Reporter.
