These announcements just keep getting better and better, don’t they?

Reported by our man on the floor Gilbert Short, it was announced that Brian Wood and Ming Doyle are pairing up for a new series at Image entitled Mara
However, as further revealed in a chat with Comics Alliance, the book is a six-issue sci-fi mini-series featuring color art by Jordie Bellaire. The book stars the eponymous Mara, “a teenage celebrity whose life becomes chaotic when she manifests superpowers.” Mara lives in a world obsessed with war and fitness, “where the angst and insecurity of average citizens is compensated with an extreme focus on sports and battle.”
As Wood explains, the book was created partially in response to the negative response to the depiction of female characters in comics. “I wanted to prove, if only to myself, that a story like this can be told without reducing it to or otherwise relying on these sorts of base depictions of women.” The book will continue to explore themes Wood has used before, specifically that of the super powered character in a more rigid and realistic world as seen in Wood and Cloonan’s Demo.
While there is no release date attached yet, we can assume everyone was sold by the line “Brian Wood and Ming Doyle are pairing up for a new series.” We know we were.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
